Grass Lake Mom is a hyperlocal news and parenting site run by Sarah Frantz. We try to keep things simple here, and that goes for privacy too. This page explains what we collect, why, and what you can do about it.
What we collect
- Email address — when you subscribe to the newsletter or become a supporter. That's the only field required.
- Name — only if you choose to give it (newsletter signup, tip submissions, comments).
- Tip and contact submissions — anything you send us through our contact form, including your message and any details you include.
- Standard web traffic data — when you visit the site, our hosting provider records the same things any website does: your IP address, which pages you visited, your browser type, and the time of your visit. This is used for security and to understand how the site is being used.
- Payment info (supporters only) — handled entirely by Stripe. We never see or store your credit card number.
We don't sell, rent, or share your information with anyone for marketing purposes. Ever.
How we use it
- Email is used to send the weekly newsletter and, for supporters, the occasional members-only update. You can unsubscribe at the bottom of any email.
- Tips and contact messages are read by Sarah. We may follow up by email if your tip leads to a story.
- Traffic data helps us know which articles are useful and catch any technical problems.
- Payment info is used by Stripe to process your supporter subscription.
Third-party services
A few trusted services help us run the site:
- Ghost (Pro) — our publishing platform. Stores newsletter signups, member accounts, and the site itself. Ghost privacy policy.
- Stripe — processes supporter payments. Stripe privacy policy.
- Formspree — handles tip and contact form submissions. Formspree privacy policy.
- Google Fonts — serves the typefaces used on the site. Google's privacy policy.
Cookies
We use a small number of cookies — mainly to keep you logged in if you're a member, and to remember basic preferences. We don't use third-party advertising or tracking cookies.
Children's privacy
Grass Lake Mom is written for parents, not kids. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you're a parent and you think your child has signed up for our newsletter, email us and we'll remove the address.
Your rights
You can:
- Unsubscribe from the newsletter anytime — every email has a one-click link at the bottom.
- Cancel your supporter membership anytime through your account page.
- Request a copy of any data we have on you, or ask us to delete it, by emailing the address below.
We respond within a reasonable amount of time — usually a few days, since this is a one-person operation.
Changes
If we update this policy, we'll bump the "last updated" date at the top. Substantive changes will also be mentioned in the newsletter.
