It’s Election Day in Grass Lake, and for most voters, the ballot comes down to one thing: the school bond.
The proposal is a $41.9 million bond for Grass Lake Community Schools. The main point you’ve probably heard is that it won’t raise taxes, and technically that’s true. It’s structured as a zero mill increase, which means the current rate wouldn’t go up. What it does mean is continuing and extending the existing debt to fund a mix of upgrades, renovations, and new construction across the district.
The plan includes a range of projects — from building improvements and classroom updates to expanded space within the district. It’s not just maintenance, but a broader investment in how the schools operate moving forward.
As a parent with kids in all three buildings, I’ve seen firsthand how the spaces are being used day to day — especially at the middle school level. That perspective is part of why I personally plan to vote yes on this.
That said, it’s still a $41.9 million decision. Even without a tax rate increase, it’s a long-term commitment, and that’s where people tend to pause. For some, the need for updates and added space makes sense. For others, the size of the bond raises questions.
That’s really what this vote comes down to — not whether improvements are needed, but whether this plan, at this scale, is the right approach right now.
Polls are open until 8 tonight, so there’s still time to vote.
Results will start coming in after they close. In a town like Grass Lake, you’ll likely hear early numbers informally, with official results reported through the county later tonight.
Either way, it’s a simple ballot with a decision that will stick around for a while.
Polls are open today until 8 PM.
